Sanctuary Advisory Council Seat Descriptions
Maritime Archaeology And History
- affiliation with professional maritime archaeology and interpretive organizations relevant to the resources of the sanctuary and/or
- affiliation with the maritime history, maritime commerce industry, merchant mariners and/or related interpretive organizations relevant to the resources of the sanctuary; and
- ability to effectively communicate and facilitate partnerships with the broader community of maritime archaeologists and/or maritime history and related interpretive regarding the goals of the sanctuary;
- experience, ability and availability to conduct maritime research and/or maritime history and related interpretive outreach consistent with the goals of the sanctuary and the mission of the council;
- direct experience working with or representing maritime archaeology and/or maritime history and related interpretive organizations, especially those involved with marine conservation;
- commitment and availability of time to chair and/or participate on council, working groups or subcommittees
Cultural Heritage
- affiliation with cultural heritage and interpretive organizations relevant to the resources of the sanctuary;
- ability to effectively communicate and facilitate partnerships with the broader community of cultural heritage and interpretive organizations regarding the goals of the sanctuary;
- experience, ability and availability to conduct cultural heritage and interpretive outreach consistent with the goals of the sanctuary and the mission of the council;
- direct experience working with or representing cultural heritage and interpretive organizations, especially those involved with marine conservation; and
- commitment and availability of time to chair and/or participate on council, working groups or subcommittees
Recreation
- affiliation with recreation industry and/or recreational organizations relevant to the resources of the sanctuary;
- ability to effectively communicate and facilitate partnerships with the broader community of recreation industry and recreational organizations regarding the goals of the sanctuary;
- experience, ability and availability to facilitate interpretive outreach consistent with the goals of the sanctuary and the mission of the council;
- direct experience working with or representing recreation industry and interpretive organizations, especially those involved with marine conservation; and
- commitment and availability of time to chair and/or participate on council, working groups or subcommittees
Recreational Fishing
- familiarity and affiliation with recreational fishing organizations in communities near the sanctuary;
- knowledge of recreational fishing activities relevant to the resources of the sanctuary;
- breadth of experience and knowledge regarding fisheries law, policies, and practices relevant to the resources of the sanctuary;
- ability and willingness to communicate with key representatives from the recreational fishing industries; and
- commitment and availability of time to chair and/or participate on council, working groups or subcommittees.
Business And Economic Development
- familiarity and affiliation with local businesses in communities near the sanctuary or relevant to resources of the sanctuary;
- understanding of the links between local business, sanctuary resources, and human activities;
- ability and willingness to communicate with key representatives from local businesses; and
- commitment and availability of time to chair and/or participate on council, working groups or subcommittees.
Tourism And Marketing
- familiarity and affiliation with the tourism industry in communities near the sanctuary,
- understanding of the links between tourism, sanctuary resources, and human activities;
- ability and willingness to communicate with key representatives from local businesses; and
- commitment and availability of time to chair and/or participate on council, working groups or subcommittees.
Education
- affiliation with formal K-12 educational institutions or organizations active in communities near the sanctuary and/or
- affiliation with educational institutions or vocational organizations active in communities near the sanctuary; and
- ability to effectively communicate and facilitate partnerships with the broader community of K-12 educators or the broader community of higher education and/or vocational organizations regarding the goals of the sanctuary;
- direct experience with Chesapeake Bay education programs and/or vocational programs;
- experience, ability, and availability to conduct educational outreach consistent with goals of the sanctuary and the mission of the council; and
- commitment and availability of time to chair and/or participate on council, working groups or subcommittees.
Research, Science And Technology
- affiliation with scientific research institutions or organizations relevant to the resources of the sanctuary;
- ability to effectively communicate and facilitate partnerships with the broader community of research, science and technology organizations regarding the goals of the sanctuary;
- direct experience with marine research programs;
- experience, ability, and availability to conduct outreach within the research community consistent with the goals of the sanctuary and the mission of the council; and
- commitment and availability of time to chair and/or participate on council, working groups or subcommittees
Commercial Fishing
- familiarity and affiliation with commercial fishing organizations active in communities near the sanctuary;
- knowledge of commercial fishing activities within the sanctuary region;
- breadth of experience and knowledge regarding fisheries law, policies, and practices affecting the sanctuary;
- ability and willingness to communicate with key representatives from the commercial fishing industries; and
- commitment and availability of time to chair and/or participate on council, working groups or subcommittees.
Citizen At Large
- reside in the area affected by the sanctuary;
- proven ability to communicate with members in communities near the sanctuary;
- experience and/or knowledge regarding marine management and resource protection issues in the sanctuary;
- experience and/or knowledge regarding public uses and activities in the sanctuary;
- freedom to express views and cast votes without consideration of any expectations held by an employer or other organization with which the member is affiliated; and
- commitment and availability of time to chair and/or participate on council, working groups or subcommittees.
Youth (Ages 14-17) - Non-voting
- be ages 14-17 at the time of application;
- interest or passion for marine resources, conservation or environmental issues;
- relevant academic course work or field training related to marine resources, conservation or environmental issues;
- knowledge regarding public uses and activities that affect marine resources and the environment;
- ability to communicate with youth members about the sanctuary;
- commitment and availability of time to participate on council, working groups or subcommittees
