How long have you been fishing in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary?
I grew up in Islamorada, FL, and as the daughter of a fishing guide, I've spent nearly 40 years fishing both offshore and in the backcountry of the incredible Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
What is your favorite fishing memory from Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary?
I have so many great memories fishing in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. On New Year's Day in 2018, my husband and I went offshore fishing and reeled in 12 different species in one day including sailfish, tuna, grouper and snapper. It was a fantastic way to start the new year!
Why is using sustainable and responsible fishing practices so important?
I was raised to respect our marine environment and wildlife, and in both my personal life and my work with the Take Me Fishing campaign, I do what I can to ensure kids and other new anglers follow fishing best practices. Things such as handling fish with your bare hands to protect their slime coat, cleaning up all litter to keep wildlife and its habitat safe, and purchasing my fishing license each year which directly supports critical state conservation projects.
How do you take care of your special fishing places?
I am a proud "Keys kid" who grew up with Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary practically in my backyard. Pair that with my current work in fishing and boating, and I was thrilled when I was asked to join NOAA's Sanctuary Business Advisory Council. I’m honored to work with this amazing group of professionals to contribute to meaningful programs that not only help conserve and protect these incredible underwater parks but also invite people of all ages, genders and cultures to experience outdoor recreation.
