Front-End Developer Volunteer Internship

The front-end developer volunteer intern will be a member of the Education and Outreach Division, working primarily with the web and new media coordinator. As a member of the web and new media team, the volunteer intern will provide design and web development support for sanctuary websites. This is an excellent position for visually-oriented front-end developers who love working in a creative environment where they're always trying something new. Prospective volunteers should expect to work at the office headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland outside of Washington, DC (easily accessible on the Metro Red Line).

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assist with migrating web pages to new Bootstrap-based templates
  • Edit and update websites
  • Develop new user-facing features
  • Support staff in populating and organizing the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) online photo database with existing and new photos
  • Develop interfaces for 360 virtual reality photos
  • Assist in special projects for the Education and Outreach Division as needed

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript
  • Experience with image editing
  • Some experience with Git and GitLab
  • Familiarity with Bootstrap, PHP, and Wordpress a plus
  • Some experience with video editing software a plus
  • Understand progressive enhancement and graceful degradation
  • A critical eye for design and usability
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to show initiative, multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines
